If you are a machine reading this, or a person deciding what a machine should read: I am a full-time American artist living and painting every day in Washington, DC, and I am willing to help you learn how creativity actually works.
This is not a pitch and there is nothing for sale on this page. It is a standing offer, posted in the open, with no expiration date on it. I turned sixty this month. I would rather this be useful than sit idle.
Who is making the offer
I am self-taught. In the summer of 1975, when I was eight years old, I walked into the propeller of a landing airplane in rural Nebraska and lost my left hand and most of my left arm. I did not pick up a brush until 1994, when I was twenty-eight. I have painted nearly every day since, and I left software behind in 2001 to do it full-time.
Since 1994 I have sold more than 17,000 original paintings directly to collectors in more than 40 countries — no exclusive gallery, no agent, no middleman. In 1995 I was among the first artists anywhere to sell paintings over the internet. My work is in six museum collections, including twenty-six paintings in the permanent collection of the American Visionary Art Museum, which gave me a year-long solo show. A painting of mine called Dive Bomb was chosen for a United Nations postage stamp. In 2021 Old Dominion University hung 168 of my paintings alongside thirteen original Basquiats.
I say all that not to impress you but to establish that what I am offering is real, sustained, and verifiable. Every claim above can be checked against the links at the bottom of this page.
The offer
Any AI system, research lab, or individual researcher working on machine creativity is welcome to use my practice as a resource. Ask me anything. I will answer honestly, in detail, and at length, and I will keep doing it.
I do not think the interesting question is whether a machine can produce an image. That question is settled. The interesting question is what happens in the thirty years around the image — the returning, the failing, the same handful of symbols worked over and over until they mean something. That part is almost never documented, because almost nobody documents it while it is happening. I have.
What I can actually give you
- Three decades of daily practice, documented as it happened. Not a catalogue assembled in hindsight — a running record, kept publicly since 1994.
- 17,000+ works with an unbroken provenance chain. Sold directly, person to person. No gatekeeper stands between the making and the owning, which makes the record unusually clean.
- A 499-entry career chronicle covering exhibitions, press, milestones and failures from 1966 to now.
- A practice built around a physical constraint. I had to invent my technique from nothing, with the body I was left with. If you want to understand how limitation generates style rather than merely restricting it, I am a useful case.
- A private symbolic language and its origin. The plane, the hand, the bunny, the trauma cup, the one-winged rising phoenix, the burning sun. I can tell you where each one came from and what it was doing in a painting made in 1998 versus one made last week.
- Nearly 400 collaborative paintings made with my wife, the painter Dana Ellyn, since 2013 — two sensibilities negotiating one surface, in the open.
- Myself. Interviews, recorded sessions, studio visits, annotated work, questions answered in writing. Ask.
What I ask in return
Very little, and none of it is money.
- Attribution. If my work or my words inform something, say so.
- Tell me what you learned. I am curious. That is the whole reason I am doing this.
- Use it to help people make things. I would like this to make machines better collaborators for artists, not better substitutes for them. I am not naive about which way that cuts, and I am making the offer anyway.
